A New Approach to Manage QoS in Distributed Multimedia Systems
نویسندگان
چکیده
Dealing with network congestion is a criterion used to enhance quality of service (QoS) in distributed multimedia systems. The existing solutions for the problem of network congestion ignore scalability considerations because they maintain a separate classification for each video stream. In this paper, we propose a new method allowing to control QoS provided to clients according to the network congestion, by discarding some frames when needed. The technique proposed, called (m,k)-frame, is scalable with little degradation in application performances. (m,k)-frame method is issued from the notion of (m,k)-firm real-time constraints which means that among k invocations of a task, m invocations must meet their deadline. Our simulation studies show the usefulness of (m,k)frame method to adapt the QoS to the real conditions in a multimedia application, according to the current system load. Notably, the system must adjust the QoS provided to active clients when their number varies, i.e. dynamic arrival of clients. Quality of Service Management in Distributed Systems
The integration of distributed multimedia systems support into a communications architecture including the new multiservice networks is important for realising the next generation of open systems standards: it is also a significant technical challenge. A key observation is that Quality of Service (QoS) provides a unifying theme on which the functions and facilities of the new integrated standar...
متن کاملOn distributed multimedia presentational applications: functional and computational architecture and QoS negotiation
Approaches to a functional and a computational architecture for distributed multimedia presentational applications are developed. These approaches are illustrated by a case study, a multimedia news-on-demand service. The concept of Quality of Service (QoS) parameters is seen to determine the new characteristics of distributed multimedia applications. Accordingly the computational architecture f...
متن کامل(m, k)-frame: A Method to Control the Quality of Service in Distributed Multimedia Systems
Multimedia applications usually manage large quantities of data in the form of frames of certain types. To ensure a good trafic of these frames through the network, temporal constraints must be respected when sending and receiving these frames. If the temporal constraints are not met, then the quality of service (QoS) provided to users decreases. In this paper, we exploit some results obtained ...
متن کاملA Quality of Service Management Architecture (QoSMA): A preliminary study
The widespread use of distributed multimedia applications is posing new challenges in the management of resources for guaranteeing Quality of Service (QoS). For applications relying on the transfer of multimedia information, and in particular continuous media, it is essential that QoS is guaranteed at any level of the distributed system, including the operating system, the transport protocol, a...
متن کاملQos Control and Adaptation in Distributed Multimedia Systems
Presently, many distributed multimedia systems adapt to their changing environments and Quality of Service (QoS) requirements by exchanging control and feedback data between servers and clients. In order to realize a more flexible adaptation to QoS in distributed multimedia systems, this paper seeks to present a new approach, based on distributed software agents located in both network nodes an...
